And I’m going to show you that if you’ve been teaching with Ventures, you’ve been covering the ELPS for years maybe without even knowing it because we made it part of the 3rd edition.  I’ll also share with you how we’ve got you covered when it comes to ELPS and the new CASAS STEPS.

Poverty Informed Practice: From Awareness to Action
Wednesday July 17, 2024 1:15pm - 2:45pm CDT
There is often a mismatch between agencies and people serving people in poverty and the people they serve. Getting better and different outcomes requires better and different approaches. Creating an environment that is truly poverty-informed and goes beyond welcoming people to wanting them takes a shift in paradigms. This session will talk about the value of embracing the lived experience of the people you serve as well as practical strategies to improve our work and your outcomes. You will be challenged, inspired, and hopefully left with a sense of productive discomfort to inspire action.

Executive Functions and Student Success
Wednesday July 17, 2024 3:00pm - 4:30pm CDT
In a post-COVID educational system, teachers are being asked to do more with less support and less resources.  There are more disparities with student populations with executive functioning skills and teachers have less support from support staff and fewer resources to ensure success for all students.  Special Education support is helpful yet unable to cover the gap created to support students academically, behaviorally, and socially within the school day.

This session will first give participants the opportunity to learn strategies to best support students who struggle with executive functioning skills including those with executive functioning disorders. These strategies will range from strategies that are immediate and easy to implement to strategies that will take more time to put into practice. Educators will also have time to share strategies they have already implemented into classrooms and have proven successful. Most educators have wonderful ideas they are implementing in isolation and rarely have the time to share and collaborate with others regarding what has been successful. This is especially the case when it comes to topics outside of the realm of curricular development. However, executive functioning is arguably one of the most important indicators of success.

Wednesday July 17, 2024 3:00pm - 4:30pm CDT
The presentation highlights the benefits of the Grade Point Index (GPI) in supplementing publisher scores on HSE transcripts with familiar measures. The GPI - a 4-point scale - is widely recognized and used by post-secondary institutions. The presentation covers the history of GPI, its motivations, and the research supporting its validity and reliability. It explains how letter grades directly correspond to GPI ranges, enabling nuanced grades (A to C with plus and minus). The session aims to enhance understanding of GPI's implementation and address better ways to explain it. There will be ample opportunity for questions and concerns, and participate in discussions to learn from the rollout of GPI and letter grades on Iowa HSE transcripts. The goals are many, but the intention is to find out what is missing and to reintroduce GPI and letter grades that appear on the Iowa TotalTranscript.

Embracing Diversity in a Multilevel Classroom
Thursday July 18, 2024 1:15pm - 2:45pm CDT
In every multilevel classroom, teachers encounter a variety of diverse learning scenarios. This is a reminder that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about inspiring and recognizing the individual learning paths of students. By leveraging various strategies and best practices, teachers can foster an inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement, motivation, and learner autonomy, empowering students to take active roles in their language acquisition journey. In this session, we will explore classroom activities from Burlington English to illustrate how educators can tailor their teaching to support all learners, regardless of their proficiency level, goals, backgrounds, and skills, thereby enhancing the overall learning experience in multilevel adult ESL classrooms. This session is inclusive of all classroom environments, including corrections.

Thursday July 18, 2024 1:15pm - 2:45pm CDT
Adult Ed programs everywhere are finding it harder and harder to keep up with the intake, record keeping, and reporting involved in walking with students through their adult education journeys. The time it takes to ensure compliance for these processes can eat away at the precious little time we have to actually work with students.  Every aspect of our programming--enrollment, English language learning, high school equivalency, career certification, employment, and now even advocacy—requires that we keep good records while also delivering the great services that adult education has to offer.  In this presentation we will share strategies for streamlining these tasks and utilizing tools and resources to make record keeping as streamlined as possible, allowing for more time to actually be spent in direct contact with students. We will share strategies and case studies of schools we have helped so that attendees can implement what they learn right away!

Have You Ever Considered Teaching in Corrections?
Thursday July 18, 2024 3:00pm - 4:00pm CDT
Working as a corrections educator can be an extremely rewarding career – teachers can work with vulnerable individuals who are keen to improve their prospects when released and who have diverse opinions that facilitate meaningful debate. A smaller class size also allows the teacher to target individuals that need support the most and provides greater opportunity to build rapport with learners. Although working in a prison is a challenge that requires resilient staff, teachers should consider the benefits of pursuing a career as a corrections educator.
